WE CAN CHANGE WHAT WE CAN MEASURE

CICON has developed in-house algorithms that enable users and brands to understand the impact of their wardrobe items on the environment in real time.

WHAT WE MEASURE

PRE-SALE

Pre-sale environmental impact of fashion garments using standard Life-Cycle Analysis tool and Eco-Invent database of impact benchmarks to measure consumed CO2 and water of each item. This calculation is performed once and registered in the app.

WHAT AFFECTS PRE-SALE SAVINGS?

Weight

Using less material in your garment leads to savings. The weight of your garment is compared to the average weight of a garment of the same primary material. Weight data for some common garments is shown in the table on the right.

Transportation method

shipping via cargo ship leads to large savings over air transport. Comparable garments are assumed to have been shipped by cargo ship, so shipping by plane will make it difficult to achieve savings

Transportation distance

by producing items locally (local raw materials and manufacturing), items don’t have to be shipped as far, reducing transportation impacts. Comparable items are made and manufactured in China and then shipped to a warehouse in the country of sale

Materials

switching to organic or recycled materials can create savings. Using material blends may create savings as well*. Comparable items are made of conventional virgin materials (not organic, not recycled).

Color

using natural colors (for example, white cotton) avoids impacts from dyeing. Our comparison garments are assumed to be dyed.

POST-SALE

Post-sale savings result from extending the lifespan of a garment. By extending the lifespan of a garment, we assume that a new garment will not be purchased during the extended lifespan. This leads to savings from offsetting consumption. The savings here are compared to the cost of performing the action (products used, electricity costs, and transportation costs) to determine the impact of the action.

WHAT AFFECTS POST-SALE SAVINGS?

Care

we match environmentally-friendly care products with wardrobe items based on the items’ materials and care instructions. Once purchased, we calculate lifespan extensions for the garment based on the number of washes/care actions from using that care product. This generates consequent CO2 and water use savings. We are also comparing impact of conventional cheap care products to those we pre-vet for our app.

Clean

we assume every clean action will add on average 10 wears to each item’s life. We then calculate CO2 and water waste savings deriving from each clean action in relation to the resources it takes to clean each item.

Repair

we assume every repair action will add on average 75 wears to each item’s life. We then calculate CO2 and water waste savings deriving from each repair action in relation to the resources it takes to repair each item.

Lend

we assume every rent action tracked in the app will add on average 15 wears to each item’s life. We then calculate CO2 and water waste savings deriving from each rental in relation to the resources it takes to deliver each item to the renter.

Resell

we assume every resell action will add on average 100 wears to each item’s life. We then calculate CO2 and water waste savings deriving from each resell in relation to the resources it takes to deliver each item to the buyer (new owner).

Recycle

we are still working on the methodology for this action. Stay tuned or get in touch with us by emailing us below.

ALWAYS IMPROVING

We are constantly making our models more robust and effective to reflect the real performance and impact of fashion on the environment. That is why we’ve partnered with Lancaster University and the Global Centre for Eco-Innovation in the UK to keep improving our methodology to power CICON impact analysis.
